Ukraine: Lawmakers vote against bill banning Russian artists

11 October 2016

Lawmakers in Ukraine’s parliament, the Verkhovna Rada, voted against a bill that would have restricted all Russian artists who wanted to tour in the country, and would only have been allowed to do so if they submitted a written condemnation of “the occupation of Ukrianian territory” to promoters, reported Billboard on 7 October 2016.

The bill would have needed 226 votes to pass, but only received 164 votes. Further, the bill did not receive enough votes to be sent back for revision.

Crimea conflict and Eurovision
The news of the bill not passing comes just a month after the Ukrainian government stated they would deny entry into the country to blacklisted Russian singers for the 62nd Eurovision contest set to take place in capital Kiev in May 2017 if they are found to support the separatist cause stemming from Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014.

The Russia-Ukraine conflict, leading to the contested sovereignty of Crimea, has left artists caught in the middle of a political struggle. Artists who have performed, or plan to perform, in Crimea, or who are seen as sympathetic to either side’s position has left their works and performances banned from being heard, screened or attended in either country.
