Turkey: Film director arrested, detained on terror charges

Film director Kazım Öz was arrested by Turkish authorities on 24 November 2018 on charges of “membership in a terror group” and “terrorist propaganda”, reported Kurdistan24.

“I’m out after two days of captivity. I’d like to say I’m free, but we all know how free it’s (sic) out there,” the award-winning director said on social media on 25 November.

“For two days, I’ve tried to answer baseless claims.

“We have no choice but to continue to struggle for a democratic and free life.”

Turkish prosecutors in the city of Diyarbakir issued an arrest warrant for Öz, who was taken into custody at a ferry terminal in the Pertek district of Tunceli province, according to Kurdistan24.

The charges relate to a 2011 investigation over membership in the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), reported Ahval news. For decades the PKK has called for the creation of an independent Kurdish state in south-eastern Turkey and now calls for more autonomy for Kurds within Turkey.

Öz has directed a number of movies focusing on Turkey’s Kurdish population.

Earlier this month, a Turkish court sentenced German-Kurdish singer Hozan Cane to six years and three months in jail for “being a member in a terrorist organisation”, namely PKK.

“I am not a member of any organisation. I am merely an artist doing art,” Cane said.
