South Africa-based Zimbabwean singer Berita Khumalo was attacked on stage while performing at the Plett Chill Out event on 30 September 2017 in Plettenberg Bay, reported Zimbabwean news source Nehanda Radio.

“Two songs into Berita’s performance, a man with a machete came on stage and started cutting sound cables before proceeding to follow Berita with the knife,” Ninel Musson, Director of Berita’s management company Vth Season, told the radio station. “It was one of the scariest incidents I have experienced at a show. I was with Berita and we are both grateful to have escaped alive and unharmed. We regret that Berita was unable to complete her set as the crowd in attendance were extremely excited to see her perform and many travelled from far to witness the African Jewel live.”

The singer was quickly taken off stage to safety and, according to a tweet from her official Twitter on 2 October, was doing well, though “traumatised”.
