Four members of Pussy Riot were arrested for 15 days of administrative arrest in June 2021, allegedly to prevent any possible action from being organised on 22 June 2021 – a day when the beginning of The Great Patriotic War is commemorated, reported Meduza.

Maria Alyokhina, Anna Kuzminykh and Ludmila Lucy Stein were arrested on 22 June 2021 under Article 19.3 of the Code of Administrative Offences, treating about a “failure to follow a lawful order of a police officer”. Alexander Sofeev was arrested on 21 June 2021 under Article 20.1 of the Code of Administrative Offences on “petty hooliganism”.

Police officers arrested Sofeev on 21 June 2021 near his house and took him to the police station. According to Meduza, police then searched Sofeev’s backpack. They found a bottle of wine, which resulted in a report stating that Sofeev and his friend were allegedly “in a public place in a state of alcoholic intoxication and were insulting human dignity.”

At the time of the arrest, Alyokhina was under house arrest and could not leave the apartment without permission due to the ongoing investigation for her participation in protests of support to Alexey Navalny in January 2021. On 21 June, she filed a petition asking for permission to leave home so that she can be vaccinated against the COVID-19 the next day. Alyokhina did not get a response. She was then detained when entering a cab.

Meduza reports that according to the arrested Pussy Riot’s members, the arrests were made because the authorities were afraid of potential organised action on 22 June 2021.

According to Freemuse’s State of Artistic Freedom 2021, Russian authorities were responsible for 90 percent of all violations of artistic freedom documented by Freemuse in 2020, with Pussy Riot continued to experience arrests on multiple occasions in 2020.
