In Swabi in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, two people were killed in a violent attack in the middle of the night when a group of transgender dancers and musicians was returning home after performing a show at a wedding party.
The attackers were waiting for the musicians and dancers in a field and tried to abduct all of them, but then opened fire as they refused. One transgender (‘hijras’) performer and the drummer of the group was killed on the spot while three others sustained injuries in the firing, according to district police chief of Swabi, Sajjad Khan.
The transgender person identified as Sana and drumbeater Ibrahim were killed on the spot while Mukhtiar, Rafiq and Qamar were injured, reported The News.
A murder case has been registered at the Yar Hussain Police Station against six men who were arrested in a police raid.
“In Pakistan, where sexual relations outside marriage are taboo and homosexuality is illegal, transgender dancers and musicians often perform at weddings and birth celebrations. But they are also treated as sex objects and often become the victims of violent assault.”
