Norway: Nobel Peace Centre event: ‘Let’s talk about freedom’

29 October 2015

On 28 October 2015, Nobel Peace Centre in Oslo, Norway, hosted a two-hour event called ‘Let’s talk about freedom’, where Freemuse’s Daniel Brown was the moderator.

Part 1

Children are the hope of the future. But what happens to the children and youth fleeing from war zones? Who are they and what are their lives like? The voices of children and young people are often missing in the news cycles from conflict spaces. Do media and policy makers tend to overlook the children? What importance do the voices of children and youth have, how and why is it important to listen to them?

What does it take to make an impact for change in a general public that has become apathetic? What impact can art and culture have, both as a humanizing tool and as a mobilizing force in areas of conflict and outside of them? The seminar’s first part will take a look at the way young people’s perspective can affect a common understanding of the war in Syria.

Part 2

The foremost dream of many of the artists who annually visit the Oslo World Music Festival, is to be able to experience peace, practice their art, free of persecution and intimidation, sing their opinions without being gagged. The second part of the seminar will raise the subject on risks associated with the practice of freedom of expression in the arts, in places where this right cannot be taken for granted. What is sacrificed and what it takes to be able to express oneself freely. Let’s Talk About Freedom.
