Laos: Australian film ‘The Rocket’ banned

As The Rocket’s campaign for an Oscar nomination gets under way, the Australian film has been banned in the country it is set in — Laos.

Director Kim Mordaunt’s drama, about an apparently cursed 10-year-old boy who wants to help his struggling family, was invited to the Luang Prabang Film Festival next month. But the censors in the communist nation have stopped the Lao-language film from screening because it deals with the touchy issue of relocating villagers for the construction of hydro-electric dams in the country.
