On 16 November 2021, Kenya Police Force arrested comedian Eric Omondi and released him later that day over allegedly “creating a disturbance” during a protest demanding more airtime and equal pay and opportunities for Kenyan artists, reported Get India News.

According to Opera News, at the protest outside of the Parliament Building, Omodni called for the media to “play 75 percent of local music” and for “equal pay, equal and fair treatment” as those given to international artists performing in Kenya.

The Kenyan Police interrupted the protest before the demonstrators reached the parliament’s grounds. Omondi reportedly jumped onto a police car during his arrest, calling on the police not to arrest him.

Freemuse’s State of Artistic Freedom 2021 report highlights 133 artists detained in 26 countries throughout 2020.
