Kazakhstan: Artist arrested during an environmental protest

13 July 2021: Artist Askhat Akhmedyarov was arrested while performing a “ritual of purification” in front of the capital’s House of Ministers to protest a hotel’s construction in the Bozzhyra tract, reported Vlast.

According to Adamdar, police arrested the activists participating in the protest with a kettling method, which consists of surrounding people and preventing them from leaving. The activists were released after a few hours.

Akhmedyarov was playing the drum, and kamcha dressed up in a shaman costume. Another activist, Aliya Akhmalisheva, participated by bringing a flag with the inscription “Bozjyrany Saqtaiyq” / “Let’s save Bozzhyra”.

Ecologists and environmental groups oppose the hotel’s construction since it could threaten fauna in the territory.

Askhat Akhmedyarov is a prominent Kazakhstani contemporary artist.
