Egypt: Poet detained and allegedly tortured over lyrics and latest book

20 April 2018

Poet Galal El-Behairy has been detained on charges of insulting the Egyptian army and Islam over lyrics for a song and latest poetry book.

Poet Galal El-Behairy’s detention for his lyrics for a music video and his latest book of poetry was renewed for 15 more days on 17 April 2018. The poet has been brought up on charges of insulting the Egyptian army and Islam, reported Masrawy and Deutsche Welle.

According to Freemuse sources, the poet was allegedly arrested on 3 March 2018 and had not been seen or heard from until 10 March when he was brought before state prosecution. The artist allegedly showed signs of torture.

Galal’s lyrics were used in a recent music video by Egyptian musician and 2011 Freemuse Award winner Ramy Essam’s latest song Balaha, which is critical of the current Egyptian regime.
