12 April 2021: Revolutionary National Police from Cotorro Municipality informed actor, poet and clown Manuel de la Cruz that they have initiated a summary judgment process against him, under the charges of “resistance”, reported ADN Cuba.
According to Radio Television Marti, the investigation against de la Cruz begun after he participated in the Movimiento San Isidro activities on 5 April 2021. De la Cruz, dressed as a clown, distributed candy to children.
The artist was put under house arrest.
Earlier this month, on 8 April 2021, de la Cruz was expelled from his job at the Pre-University Insititute “Roberto Santiago Labrada Ávila”, where he worked as a teacher. According to Periodico Cubano, because of the events from 5 April 2021, the institute’s committee of experts found de la Cruz unsuitable for his position due to his “non-alignment with the principles of Cuban educational ethics and policy.”
According to Freemuse’s State of Artistic Freedom 2021 report, the opponents of Decree 349—primarily those associated with the San Isidro Movement—continued to face systematic persecution throughout 2020.
