Belarus: Musician sentenced to administrative arrest for allegedly ‘calling for rebellion’ in his songs

2 April 2021: Street musician Ivan Pireiko was sentenced to 15 days of administrative arrest after he was arrested on charges of “calling for rebellion” in his songs, reported Belarus Feed.

Pireiko was sentenced under Article 24.23 of Criminal Code “for picketing with the help of songs”. In addition to the prison sentence, his guitar, microphone, and stage were ordered to be confiscated.

The police reports highlight songs played by Pireiko in honour of the 100th anniversary of the Belarusian People’s Republic, which contained lyrics such as “we are the best people”, as Belarus Feed reports. 

According to Nasha Niva, the artist performed on the streets as part of City of Minsk’s Пешеходка / Pedestrian music project, aiming to bring musicians to play in the public areas in the city.
