On 17 August, singer Roxana Carabajal and dancer Sandra Farías were detained after trying to stop the police from arresting a group of young people playing without a face mask in Santiago del Estero, Argentina, reported La Banda Diario and Pagina 12.
A group of young people around 20 years old, including sons of Farías Juan and Nazareno Saavedra, were arrested while playing football outside their house, as three of them were not wearing a face mask and therefore were breaking the Covid-19 rules. At that point, singer Roxana Carabajal and dancer Sandra Farías arrived on the spot and tried to stop the officers. They were detained together with the three young men at a nearby police station (Escuela de Suboficiales y Agentes). The men were detained for not complying with Covid-19 regulations and the women for resistance to authority.
In a video shared on La Banda Diario, Nazareno Saavedra describes the treatment he received from the police. “He grabbed me by the neck and said ‘Ah you want to sing? Come against the wall’, in front of all the people …], and he tells me ‘Sing now!’. He could have just told me ‘You cannot sing’. Why do there have to be these abuses?” after he had started singing one of his songs. He also reports that as his mother (Sandra Farías) had been arrested with no shoes on, he gave her his own, after which police officers openly mocked them “You were an idiot, now you are going to freeze!”.
In the same video, Sandra Farías explains the officers refused to tell her why her son was being detained and where he was being taken when she arrived. “Just a few weeks ago two deaths have happened in two police stations in Santiago del Estero, of a girl and a boy, which are still unpunished. As a mother, how should I not be worried about where they are taking my son and his friends?”
