Music as a Weapon

TRAILER Music as a Weapon: ENGLISH

In this podcast & animation project ‘Music as Weapon’ the musicians fight for their music and a life in freedom. The ban on music and the arrests of musicians all over the world, is a threat to our freedom. My podcasts tell about the lives of these musicians who have been persecuted. Through their stories, I want to investigate why repressive regimes are so afraid of music.

Igor Stravinsksi once said that music expresses nothing but music. But reality is different, because, music does not seem to be innocent.

The musician Victor Jara is murdered for his music. I was a child then, but what I heard then is burned into my memory. That memory, of that day while listening to the radio, is the start for my research in this series of podcasts. Because, how can music have such great power that a dictator is afraid of it.

Part 5: VALTONYC | EXIL FROM SPAIN - ENGLISH

About the Spanish Rapper Valtonyc. He fled Spain in 2018 because of his music and lyrics. He fled to Belgium, because in Spain he was sentenced to 3 1/2 years in prison under a heavy regime. He is not the only Spanish rapper that was sentenced, 14 others have been convicted. Spain is high on the Freemuse world list in 2019 when it comes to captive musicians. Freemuse publishes a report every year on The State of the Artistic Expression. Only Cuba has a higher number with 19 artists. Censorship to Music is taking place nearby in Europe, so close to my country The Netherlands.

Part 6: EUROPE | FREEDOM | PROHIBITED RAP MUSIC - English

In Belgium I speak with Valtonyc's lawyer, Master Paul Bekaert. Valtonyc, the rapper, was convicted for "glorification of terrorism." Spain merely prosecutes the rapper for what he says. Condemns him and his music as if he were a terrorist. Belgium has been asked for extradition. The judges in Ghent do not ponder about that, Valtonyc is not a terrorist in Belgium.

On 15 March 2017, the European Union issued directive 541 for all its member states. National governments must incorporate laws into their own legislation, that make "glorifying terrorism" punishable. Spain, Bulgaria and Hungary, among others, have created and implemented laws. Belgium has not yet complied with the European directive.

Part 7: MUSIC & FREEDOM & BITTER STORIES – English

We spoke with Srirak Plipat, Freemuse director. And the mission Freemuse has; to unveil all the cases of artists at risk. Throughout his story we look into the bitter stories of Musicians who had to flee to Paris and Belgium, because of their music.

We spoke with Cheick Tidiane Seck. He had to flee from Mali in the ’70’s and is now again worried about the situation in his country Mali. Just like the Chilean composer Patricio Wang who had to flee from Chili in the '70's, And Spanish Rapper Valtonyc had to go into exil very recently. The story of being banned for your music is a never ending story.

Proloog

Part 4: Schuldige Plekken - DUTCH

The State of the Artistic Expression.

Part 6 EUROPA | Vrijheid | Verboden RAP Muziek - DUTCH:

Valtonyc's advocaat Meester Paul Bekaert is ongerust.

Part 7: MUSIC & FREEDOM & BITTER STORIES – DUTCH:

We spoke with Srirak Plipat, Freemuse director. And the mission Freemuse has; to unveil all the cases of artists at risk. Throughout his story we look into the bitter stories of Musicians who had to flee to Paris and Belgium, because of their music.

Part 1: LA MUSICA PROHIBIDA | EXILIO - SPANISH

We start with Patricio Wang, the composer. He had to go into exile in the Netherlands. Leaving Chile for the repressive Pinochet regime. My podcasts tell about the lives of these musicians who have been persecuted. Through their stories, I want to investigate why repressive regimes are so afraid of music. Igor Stravinsksi once said that music expresses nothing but music. But reality is different. Because, music does not seem innocent.

Part 2. LA CAIDA DE ALLENDE | NAUFRAGIO - SPANISH

How Allende was killed during Pinochet's coup. I have the original sounds. How Patricio, now living in Amsterdam, made a composition of these sounds. He studied composition in Holland with Louis Andriessen after his exil from Chili. How musicians in Chile think about Patrick and his music. And his resistance, now, so many years later.

Part 3. LA TRAICION | EL PIANO - SPANISH

How Nicolás Moreno's father also had to flee. Like Patricio Wang had to flee to The Netherlands. Nicolas Moreno plays the music here in Chili, that Patricio Wang composed in Amsterdam, so far away. How the coup and Pinochet regime still affects life in Chile and in Holland even nowadays.

Part 4. GUILTY PLACE - SPANISH

The Rubber Duck & the Esmeralda in Valparaiso. In this part of the podcast I search for the Navy ship ‘Esmeralda’ in Chile. The Navy ship where prisoners under Pinochet were tortured during the dictatorship. I find the 'rubber duck' of the Dutch artist Florentijn Hofman floating in front of the ‘Esmeralda’. Provoking art in a guilty Chilean harbor in Valparaiso. I join Patricio in Amsterdam, were he can vote for the first time since he went into exil.

Part 5: VALTONYC in EXIL - English / Spanish

About the Spanish Rapper Valtonyc. He fled Spain in 2018 because of his music and lyrics. He fled to Belgium, because in Spain he was sentenced to 3 1/2 years in prison under a heavy regime.
