Turkey: Imam who is also a musician receives threats

Imam and rock musician Ahmet Muhsin Tüzer gave a concert with a repertoire composed entirely by himself at Kaş Marina on 10 August 2013. After the concert was reported by the press, he began to receive threatening and insulting messages.

42-year-old Ahmet Muhsin Tüzer is an imam of a mosque in the village Pınarbası in Turkey. He is also known as the “Rocker Imam”, because together with friends from the village, he has founded a rock band called FiRock Grubu.

Ahmet Tüzer has received so many inconceivable threatening and insulting messages following a recent music concert, that he has now filed a complaint to the public prosecutor’s office.

“Whilst it is fine to chant, I do not understand why one would take offense at a song that combines Islamic mysticism and rock music,” he was quoted as having said.

This was reported by the newsletter Freedom of Expression Weekly Bulletin, Issue 33/13, from Antenna TR on 16 August 2013.
