In the session ‘THE ARTIST VS. THE STATE: THE CASE OF LAPIRO DE MBANGA AND THE CAMPAIGN FOR PUSSY RIOT’, Maran Turner and Alexander Cheparukhin give insight into two cases where artists have been speaking out and as a result ended up in prison. 

Maran Turner, Executive Director of Freedom Now, talks about the case of Lapiro de Mbanga and the three-year-long fight for his release that mobilized governments and UN institutions. She is followed by Alexander Cheparukhin, Music Producer and Prgrammer, who was personally involved in the global campaign calling for a fair trial for and release of members of the Russian feminist punk group Pussy Riot:
