Malaysia: Committee to evaluate whether song should be banned

Committee to evaluate whether song should be banned

The Malaysian song ‘Bawaku Pergi’, which is sung by Kaka and actor-comedian Zizan, was suggested to be banned because it contains lyrics which could encourage young people to run away from home. The minister of culture wants to give it a second thought.

The Malaysian Minister of Culture has asked an evaluation committee consisting of representatives from public service broadcaster Radio Televisyen Malaysia, RTM, and the ministry’s Music Division to provide a report on the song.

“The evaluation committee should carefully study a song first before deciding whether to ban the song or not,” said Information, Communications and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim according to an article published by The Daily Sun in Malaysia.

“The committee should make its stand on the lyrics and decide whether the song should be banned or not. We should take note that more terrible songs have been sung by people,” he told the participants at a function where he gave a speech. “So, let’s give the evaluation committee a bit of time to study the song so that we’ll be doing the right thing.”
