Burma / Myanmar:
Zayar Thaw barred from singing at a live concert

Zayar Thaw, a famous hip hop singer who was released from prison under an amnesty in May after serving three and a half years of a five-year sentence for his political activities, was barred by Mingla Taung Nyunt township authorities from singing at a live concert in Rangoon, reported The Irrawaddy.

Zayar Thaw, a co-founder and member of the students pro-democracy group Generation Wave, told The Irrawaddy that the authorities had applied pressure on the concert organisers by saying that if he were on the bill, permission for the concert would be denied. The live concert, which included various well-known pop stars, was held on 6 August 2011 at Kandawgyi Lake.

Speaking to The Irrawaddy, Zayar Thaw said: “It is simply unreasonable to ban me for my political views.”

He told that he had not been informed by the authorities under the new administration of President Thein Sein whether he is currently banned from performing. In July, he told Mizzima News that; “Currently, I’m not banned. But I don’t know about the future. Meanwhile, I heard that my interviews with local journals were not allowed to be published by the censors.”
