Iran:

Iranian authorities inspired by the Nazis?

‘Degenerate music’ (Entartete) was a term used by the Nazis in Germany in the 1930s to describe certain forms of music. The same term is increasingly being adapted by Iranian authorities.

According to Tehran-Emrouz, an Iranian daily newspaper, Tehran’s chief of police Hossein Sajedi-Nia has revealed the fate of young Iranians who are attracted to what he calls ‘morally deviant’ music.

Young Iranian men and women were arrested last week in a score of raids targeting the capital’s underground rap scene. The rappers – both male and female – according to the chief of police had taken over ‘vacant’ buildings in order to create what Iran’s regime has depicted as ‘degenerative, anti-Islamic music’.

Tehran-Emrouz describes how the police kept the buildings under surveillance after they were informed that “young boys and girls” had been seen with “unusual appearances and musical instruments”.

Lyrics about corruption and abuse
In a comment in UK-based newspaper The Telegraph, journalist Leyla Ferani wrote:

“Iranian rap is not a direct emulation of what the regime deems ‘messianic’ American rap; its lyrics often derive from the pain of living under the corruption and abuse of the Islamic Republic.
Significantly, the arrested rappers were accused of spreading their music virally. The underground Iranian music industry is using one of the most contentious – and what is fast becoming the most dangerous – tools in order to transcend borders of the Islamic Republic: the internet. They are no longer safe. The regime’s repression of talented musicians seeks to drive undesirable young Iranians out of the country, or destroy their lives within it ”.
