Myanmar/Burma:
Freemuse in joint campaign for imprisoned comedian

The Free Zarganar Campaign, which advocates for the immediate release of Burmese comedian Zarganar, urges MEP’s to nominate Zarganar for the European Parliament’s Sakharov Price.

The Free Zarganar Campaign, was launched by a coalition of human rights and freedom of expression organisations, including Freemuse, following his arrest in 2008. The goal is to mobilise public opinion and win Zarganar’s immediate release.

Zarganar is currently serving a 35 years imprisonment sentence for statements given to the international community on his government’s handing of the Cyclone Nargis that hit Burma in 2008.

The Sakharov Price
The European Parliament website explains that:

“The Sakharov Prize is intended to honour exceptional individuals who combat intolerance, fanaticism and oppression. Like Andrei Sakharov himself, all the winners of the prize have shown how much courage it takes to defend human rights and freedom of expression”.

Freemuse and the other members of the Free Zarganar Campaign believe that if he were to win this year’s Sakharov Prize this would help to raise greater awareness of his case and of the continuing human rights abuses in Burma.

We need to get 40 Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) to nominate Zarganar and as a result Freemuse has taken up the task of briefing the Danish MEP’s about the possibility of nominating Zarganar for the Sakharov price.
