Malaysia:

Muslims barred from hip-hop concert

The American hip-hop group Black Eyed Peas is scheduled to perform at a theme park near Kuala Lumpur on 25 September 2009, but because the concert is spnsored by a brewery, the Irish beermaker Guinness, “the party is only open to non-Muslims aged 18 years and above,” states the website for the concert.

“Muslims cannot attend. Non-Muslims can go and have fun,” an official at the Ministry of Information, Communication and Culture explained, according to a news article by The Associated Press / Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.

Malaysia recently launched a crackdown against alcohol consumption among its Muslim majority. Government regulations forbid alcohol companies from organizing concerts in Malaysia, but an exception was made for this event because there were hopes it would boost tourism, the official from the ministry said.

The group has played in Malaysia before — including a concert in 2007 that everyone could attend.
