Campaign to release musician Lapiro
In October, Freemuse along with Freedom Now, International PEN, the guitar producer Vigier and the website MyMondoMix.com started petitions, protests and media campaigns against the three-year prison sentence and exorbitant fine imposed on the singer-songwriter Lapiro de Mbanga from Cameroon. Global Forum
1-6 June  Freemuse took part in the Global Forum on Freedom of Expression in Oslo, Norway, and held meetings with political and media activists as well as sister organisations such as Pen International and Index on Censorship. Artists’ voices were embarrassingly missing at the forum’s sessions. Read more…
 
Mexico
June  

Freemuse was invited to the final week of one of Latin America’s biggest music festivals, Ollinkan, in one of the most deadly places for musicians, Mexico, for a 40 minute powerpoint presentation on the challenges the organisation is facing in monitoring abuses against musicians.

Consultative status with ECOSOC
In May the Freemuse secretariat applied for consultative status with the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).
 
Missing Voices
Wednesday 11 March Ole Reitov, Freemuse, lectured on music censorship/freedom of expression at a seminar organised by `Missing Voices´ – a trans-European Muslim Women Music Makers Campaign. The event taking place in Denmark included artists from the Netherlands, UK and Scandinavia.
 
Music Freedom Day – Freemuse Award
Tuesday 3 March Freemuse in collaboration with Re:Orient organised two seminars and a concert in Stockholm, Sweden celebrating Music Freedom Day. Artists Chiwoniso, Zimbabwe, Ferhat Tunc, Turkey and Mahsa Vahdat joined forces with Sweden’s Matti Bye in the concert recorded by Swedish Broadcasting Corporation. The concert even featured the presentation of the Freemuse Award to Pete Seeger, who’s grandson and musician Tao Rodriquez-Seeger, received the award on his behalf and performed a couple of songs.

EU Workshop:Artists mobility/Visa Issues
Friday 13 February Freemuse by invitation from ECOTEC and EU Commission DG Education and Culture took part in a workshop on information systems to support the mobility of artists and professionals in the field of culture.
 
Parliamentary Hearing: Culture and Development
Wednesday 4 February The Danish Parliament held a hearing on the implementation of the Unesco Convention on Cultural Diversity. Ole Reitov, Freemuse, was invited to keep an opening speech along with the Ministers of Development and Culture. Reitov advocated a pro-active solution to visa issues for artists from non EU-countries and suggested national cultural institutions and public broadcasting to actively integrate and promote further artistic expressions  from developing countries.

 
Democracy in Dakar – Film screenings and seminars in Malmö & Copenhagen
Sunday 1 February & Monday 2 February Filmmaker and musician Ben Herson presented his film Democracy In Dakar about music and politics in Senegal at the Music Doc Festival, Malmoe, Sweden and at the Danish Centre for Culture and Development in Copenhagen, Denmark. Freemuse programme manager Ole Reitov moderated discussions on music and politics with the filmmaker and the audiences.
