Music Freedom Day from Peshawar to New York

In spite of continuous threats and attacks on musicians and music activities in Peshawar, Music Freedom Day will once again be organised in Pakistan. Events take place in several countries including Zimbabwe, Morocco, Senegal, Norway, United Kingdom and USA. Broadcasters have prepared special programmes on music censorship, and a sneak-preview of the film ‘They will have to kill us first’ will be presented in a couple of cities.

Freemuse Award Ceremony in Harstad

Freemuse Award winner, Harstad – a small Norwegian community almost 300 kilometres north of the polar circle – is hosting a one-day Music Freedom Day event organised by SafeMUSE. During the evening concert the Freemuse Award will be presented to the city.

Behind Freemuse statistics thousands of musicians suffer repression

In 2014 Freemuse registered a total number of 90 attacks and violations against musicians’ rights to musical freedom of expression. Behind the statistics is an even more violent reality – thousands of musicians affected by threats, non-transparent censorship mechanisms and fear of retaliation leading to self-censorship.

Freemuse conducts study for UNESCO

UNESCO has contracted Freemuse to conduct a study on protection and promotion of artistic freedom globally. The study sponsored by CKU will review reports of UNESCO member states and how they have/have not promoted and protected artistic freedom as part of their obligations to the ratification of the UNESCO convention on Diversity of Cultural Expressions. The main findings of the Freemuse study will be presented in a ‘Global Monitoring Report on the Implementation of the 2005 Convention’ to be published in second half of 2015.

Disastrous effects of war on music in Swat Valley

A new Freemuse-supported study reveals that the market for music CDs has been reduced by 95 per cent since the invasion of the Swat Valley in Northern Pakistan by the Taliban. Before the crisis the CD business was flourishing in the valley. The final study will be published internationally during spring 2015. Freemuse Award winner Ferhat Tunc wins case against Turkey

The European Court of Human Rights has convicted Turkey of violating freedom of speech in the case of singer Ferhat Tunç. A Turkish court had sentenced Ferhat Tunç to three months in prison and ordered him to pay a fine for having made dissident comments during a concert.

Morocco should release rapper

Freemuse condemns the conviction and harsh treatment of Moroccan rapper Abdul Mou’men Al Shuaibi and calls for his immediate and unconditional release ahead of the appeal hearing. Al Shuaibi was imprisoned after having criticised Moroccan Police in a song.
