Freemuse launches advocacy and campaign guide

Artists around the world face threats, attacks and imprisonment. Some are forced to flee into exile. To help organisations and individuals decide how to support artists at risk, Freemuse has created an advocacy and campaign guide, launched publically today. The guide, available in Arabic, English, French and Pashto, offers information on asylum processes, international conventions as well as advice on how to efficiently document arts freedom violations, how to share the information and how to advocate for change.

A global celebration of Music Freedom Day

Events where held around the world when musicians, cultural organizers and freedom of expression advocates for the ninth year celebrated Music Freedom Day on 3 March 2015. This year, the celebration took place on at least four continents spanning cities from Barcelona, Bologna, Casablanca, Dakar, Harare, Peshawar, New York to Harstad, Norway; all linked together digitally under the hashtag #MusicFreedomDay.

Freemuse Executive Director Ole Reitov was in Norway to present the City of Harstad with the 2014 Freemuse Award at the city’s Music Freedom Day conference and concert. In 2013, Harstad declared itself the world’s first ‘Safe city for musicians’. The city is currently hosting Sudanese peace singer Abazar Hamid, who was forced into exile in 2008. Hamid was among the musicians preforming on stage at the event.
